Dear family and friends,
I hope you are doing well! This summer I have the opportunity to travel with a team of teachers and medical professionals to South America. We will be providing professional development training for teachers in the rural communities of Ccamahuara and Socma in Peru. 20% of the population in these communities live in extreme poverty and 50% of these community members have only reached a primary school level of education. While we are there we will be working with teachers, students, and community leaders. We will provide workshops to teachers that do not have professional development opportunities. As we spend time with educators and community leaders on the trip, we will also gain an understanding of the challenges the students face and try to learn from their experiences. We are sure the learning will be mutual and many relationships will be established. Since we will be learning about the history and culture of Peru and will be visiting some of their prominent historical sites, we will also be looking for ways to bring this experience back into our own classrooms and develop connections within our curriculum where possible.
Each team member has been asked to raise funds to cover the expenses and resources for this service opportunity. This is a volunteer service trip facilitated by the non-profit organization INGAGE UNLIMITED.
